The Head and Neck Anesthesiology Fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine is a one-year fellowship with concentrated clinical experience providing anesthesia for ENT/head and neck surgical cases and interventional pulmonology cases. In addition to rotations, fellows will spend 1 day per week assigned as the “airway fellow” to assist with any difficult or potentially difficult OR and non-OR airway management, 1 day per week as a general attending anesthesiologist, and will have dedicated time to pursue scholarly activity. Fellows also rotate with laryngologists from the Section of Otolaryngology where they will learn about airway pathology and practice flexible laryngoscopy and tracheostomy.

The U-M Medical School Department of Anesthesiology is delighted to offer a one-year Head and Neck – Advanced Airway Management Anesthesiology Fellowship. This fellowship is focused upon providing advanced training in both the perioperative care of patients undergoing head and neck surgeries and advanced airway procedures. Research opportunities are numerous, with fellows joining an active ongoing research program investigating outcomes in this patient group. Fellows have an essential role in the department’s medical education mission, sharing their knowledge and skills with the residents and medical students of the University of Michigan. Our program is flexible, tailored to the needs and experience of each fellow. Significant focused is placed upon development of an advanced airway management skillset as well as understanding of various head and neck pathologies and approach to their surgical and medical management. The Departments of Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery fully support our fellowship and have been involved in designing content and learning opportunities.

Stanford School of Medicine
We are proud to offer a one-year combined head and neck/advanced airway anesthesia fellowship. The Stanford head and neck/advanced airway teaching program has been in place since 1998, and our department has pioneered this subspecialty fellowship training in the U.S. in 2009.
This unique fellowship is highly structured, integrating didactic, clinical, simulation and research components. Comprehensive lectures and discussions are combined with outstanding opportunity to manage complex cases, and to acquire state-of-the-art advanced airway management skill sets in real life situations. The Stanford head and neck anesthesia division is one of the busiest in the department, and runs 3-6 operating rooms every day. We perform over 3,000 H&N anesthetics annually.
The surgical procedures range from major head and neck cancer surgery to complex laryngeal surgery, transoral robotic surgery (TORS), surgery for obstructive sleep apnea, advanced neurotologic and skull base surgery, functional endoscopic sinus and pituitary surgery, facial plastic surgery, as well as maxillofacial and orthognatic surgery. The fellow(s) will learn unique anesthetic implications for these procedures, and become proficient with pharmacokinetic principles of different opioid infusions, and administration of total intravenous anesthesia and deliberate hypotension. The trainee(s) will also master different jet ventilation techniques and the use of the advanced oxygenation techniques, such as THRIVE (transnasal humidified rapid-insufflation ventilatory exchange) for laryngologic surgery. Simulation-based difficult airway management is also included as part of the fellowship training.
Although the majority of training will be on the adult patient population, participation in the anesthesia care of pediatric head and neck surgical patients, many of whom present to Stanford with congenital airway abnormalities, can be arranged.
Flexibility in the fellowship curriculum is allowed, and the program can be structured to suit the individual needs. We will accept 1-2 qualified individuals each year. All applicants must have a strong commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and research, which will constitute an integral part of the fellowship year.

Dalhousie University
Through our Airway Management Fellowship, you will learn all airway techniques, including surgical airway in pediatric, obstetric and adult populations. You will learn from the best: our diverse and experienced faculty are well-known for teaching airway courses and workshops nationally and internationally. You will also be offered many opportunities to develop skills in clinical care, judgment, teaching and research.
You will direct and supervise the clinical care of patients with difficult airways at the QEII Health Sciences Centre and the IWK Health Centre, as well as in our simulation centre. Additionally, you will be encouraged and supported to teach airway courses and workshops.
We offer you opportunities to participate in local, national and international teaching forums and to engage in and conduct research studies in clinical and simulated settings. You will also be supported to submit manuscripts and abstracts for publication and scientific meetings.
University of Toronto – Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH)
During this one-year Airway Fellowship, fellows will learn and gain clinical experience in all airway techniques for a diverse patient population in high-risk obstetrics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, head and neck surgery, and dental surgery for the developmentally delayed. The airway fellowship has an active teaching curriculum in airway crisis resource management, airway ultrasound, and surgical airways using different techniques on mannequin, tissue, and hybrid models. Additionally, the fellow will be actively involved in teaching airway courses and simulations and will participate in the Multidisciplinary Airway Team at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The airway fellow will conduct airway research in clinical and simulation settings. Successful candidates will have one dedicated nonclinical day per week. The fellow will have the opportunity to present their research at local, national, and international scientific meetings. The fellow will gain experience in formulating/conducting research projects, writing ethics submissions, and writing/completing a manuscript for publication.

University of Toronto – Toronto General Hospital (TGH)
The airway fellowship focuses on the acquisition and demonstration of expertise in airway evaluation and management, enabling the individual to serve as an essential resource in the teaching and management of difficult airways.
The fellow will be actively involved in the care of patients undergoing complex head and neck surgical procedures. Approximately 100 major head and neck procedures, 50 laryngectomies and/or pharyngectomies, several tracheal resections, retrosternal thyroidectomies, laser airway surgery, panendoscopies, awake tracheotomies, neck dissections, and major reconstructions are performed each year.
The fellow will gain proficiency with a range of specific devices, including a variety of supraglottic airways, bronchoscopes, video laryngoscopes, and optical stylets. There is also an emphasis on identifying and managing the “difficult to extubate” airway with various evaluation techniques, tube exchangers, and supraglottic airways.
The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in the out-patient Head and Neck Clinic, assessing airways, mastering endoscopic techniques, and observing the outcome of complex reconstructions.
Participation in research and education is expected. Research is integrated into the fellowship, with academic time provided to those involved in projects, with a goal of one non-clinical day per week. There will be opportunities to join existing research projects, initiate new ones, and present findings at local, national, and international meetings.Participation and presentation at academic conferences are encouraged. Travel grants are available for research presentations at eligible North American meetings.Active participation in the airway workshops at the Toronto Anesthesia Symposium is expected.

The Combined Advanced Airway &ENT fellowship is an amazing opportunity to hone your airway management skills through a compilation of challenging rotations through otolaryngology, thoracic, interventional pulmonology, bariatrics, oromaxillary, and pediatrics. Encounter the airway from an otolaryngology perspective while spending 2 months in their clinics and following patients to the operating room. An opportunity to participate in elective front of neck management in the operating room is an outstanding part of this fellowship.
The ability to participate in quality and process improvement projects as a fellow is a significant part of the fellowship. Research opportunities and the ability to attend the Society for Airway Management meeting is embedded into the fellowship.
